The Experian Decision Analytics Forum 2007

At the end of October, we hosted 121 clients from 76 organisations from 35 countries at our seventh annual Experian Decision Analytics Forum in Venice. This was a fantastic event which brought together delegates from Europe, the Middle East and Africa - and we even had a contingent from the Bahamas.

It was my great privilege to chair the event and I would like to take this opportunity to thank our guest speakers from Garanti Bank (Turkey), Česká Spořitelna (Czech Republic), edeus (UK), Unicredit (Italy) and permanent tsb (Ireland), for sharing their experiences and contributing to what was an informative and thought-provoking experience for everyone attending.

As I listened to all of the presentations a number of themes emerged which were common to many of the organisations in the audience:

Dr Ömer Faruk Alış from Garanti Bank highlighted the growing importance of the Internet channel: customers want to make applications at any time of the day and they want an answer quickly. This puts pressure on lenders to ensure that their systems can gather the right data, transform it into predictive scores and overlay decision strategies quickly, flexibly and accurately.

Credit bureau data is a vital component in the development of credit markets generally and in the construction of a robust risk management infrastructure within an individual organisation. During the Credit Bureau stream, which was attended by representatives from seven different countries, there was much interest in the development of bureau scores, in particular, the types of bureau scores that can be built and their role in summarising complex credit bureau data.

"A number of the speakers discussed the challenges of operating across borders..."

Basel II is now the framework within which all banking organisations have to operate and fundamental to this is the use of analytics to support risk management and capital allocation. Dr Tommaso Giordani from Unicredit gave us a fascinating insight into how his company is using advanced analytics to calculate risk adjusted performance measures that can be used in the bank’s capital allocation process.

A key function in any lending organisation is the collections and recoveries process and Dr Harald Walitsch from Česká Spořitelna gave an insight into the operation of the collections function in a major bank.

A number of the speakers discussed the challenges of operating across borders. A key challenge to this is the availability of credit bureau data which varies considerably from country to country. Mike Bradford, President of the Association of Consumer Credit Information Suppliers (ACCIS) described some of the provisions of the Consumer Credit Directive and its motivation to create a level playing field to facilitate cross-border lending.

Mike Bradford also took part in our Round Table event where he was joined by delegates representing organisations from Spain, Italy, France, Germany and the UK. The session, chaired by our Marc Gaudart - Decision Analytics’ Senior Vice-President, focussed on the development of consumer credit markets across Europe and produced a number of interesting perspectives on issues such as the new European Directive.

You can read more about these themes in the articles featured in this issue of e-news and, as always, our consultants are available if you wish to discuss anything further.

Looking forward, if you are interested in attending the Experian Decision Analytics Forum 2008, please contact us to pre-register and we will ensure that you are kept informed of developments.
